Anonymous asked: Hey Crendor, I really appreciate your Youtube advice as an aspiring Youtuber. I've heard a lot of people talk about how most Youtubers just got very lucky, and that's how they've gotten to where they are today. Do you believe this is the case? If so, what's the best way to get "lucky?" Thanks!
Well, I think everyone needs a bit of luck, but there’s no way all the Youtubers who are big happened to play the ‘Youtube lottery’ and win. The vast majority of Youtubers I’ve met are very smart, especially marketing-wise. A lot of people underestimate the amount of marketing Youtubers actually do, because when it comes down to it, you’re no different than any other business out there; You want your content seen.
There’s a quote I heard that said, “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” and it’s true. Take, for example, a basketball team. One team may have practiced rebounding all week, while the other practiced for 5 minutes. When the game happens, and the team that practiced is getting most of the rebounds, the other team might say, “Wow, I wish we were lucky enough to have the ball bounce to us every time.” You can’t control where the ball will bounce, but you can control the techniques and strategy of making sure you have the best possible odds of getting it.
I think anyone that starts a Youtube channel will realize it’s not easy. It often takes years of consistent video production of videos that people actually want to watch and share with their friends that you are passionate about creating. Some people may get lucky with a video once, or even twice, but you can’t build a Youtube career off luck. It doesn’t work that way.
